I was at the Mets/Dodgers game on Saturday and a drunk tried to get us to chant. He was largely unsuccessful, as those who went along with it were pretty much drowned out by those chanting "Yankees suck!" instead. (I don't endorse that chant either because I don't endorse the use of the word suck as a pejorative; it's sexist and homophobic. I'm really no fun at all, am I?) When security arrived to tell him to sit down and be quiet, there was a lot of applause. New Yorkers just don't go for that Babbitt stuff. I believe I heard someone a few rows behind me yell, "Siddown, Patton!"
Incidentally, Citi Field is gorgeous. I had never been there before. I felt perfectly American just sitting watching a ball game and eating cheese fries; there was no need to get jingoistic.
