I'm a Bradbury hero because I have no TV

I haven't read Fahrenheit 451 in about twenty years, but I was at a coffee shop the other day when, irritatingly, a tutor was reading a section of it aloud to his pupil. Why the kid couldn't read it himself is a mystery to me. Anyway, it was one of the parts featuring Montag's little manic pixie dream girl friend Clarisse, who retains her zest for life because she was spanked as a child and because she does all the housework by hand. Remember her? I immediately did. Clearly she made a deep impression on me twenty years ago, so I think I must have realized even then that this particular aspect of Bradbury's dystopian scenario was bullshit. He was clearly very smart, but he wrote this whole book in which women become vapid and suicidal when they no longer have to iron shirts. That seemed reasonable, in 1953, to an intelligent man.
