There is a scene in Buster Keaton's The Navigator when Buster, as pampered rich boy Rollo Treadway, must don full diving gear to make repairs to the cruise ship on which he and his sweetheart have found themselves alone and adrift. The diving equipment of 1924 was funny enough all by itself, but the camera follows Buster underwater, so there are underwater gags too. According to my father, one such gag, originally, involved Buster affixing a starfish to his chest and directing passing schools of fish like a traffic cop. This was the scene that got the biggest laughs when the trailer appeared in theaters, but Buster cut it because it was a throwaway gag that didn't serve the film as a whole.
I thought of that story when I scanned this, another experiment in drawing a cat:
Originally there was a third line of dialogue: "You almost fed me last year, but Martinez got injured." To me that line is funny, but mars the form of the joke, such as it is.
