Lobotomists in love

As you may remember, in 1946 Egas Moniz very shyly asked Walter Freeman if he'd nominate Moniz for the Nobel Prize. Walter wrote back that he'd already done it, without Moniz's even having to ask. This lovey-dovey exchange is among the letters I read at the GWU library this week.

I drew the following while waiting for the bus to take me back home, which is where, thank goodness, I am now.

I think the words are "appreciable initiation." Moniz didn't have particularly legible handwriting, plus the ink has been fading for over sixty years, and though his English was quite good he would occasionally bust out weird word choices like these. Incidentally, while I already knew about Walter addressing Egas as cher maître in these letters, what El-Hai's book doesn't mention is that Egas greeted Walter (at least once) as Meu caro Professor Freeman. Get a room, you two!

More soon and yes I got pictures of the leucotomes.
