Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!

It's one of the characteristics of being a New Yorker that you can walk past really big honking edifices like this one hundreds and hundreds of times without really noticing them. I mean look at this thing. When it was erected, ninety-nine years ago this month, it must have commanded the whole immediate area. Now, of course, it is surrounded by skyscrapers and a confusion of automobile traffic. This plus the fact that it is mostly a blank expanse of stone make it easy to ignore. I doubt many New Yorkers could tell you what it commemorates. You have to read the plaque, and I admit that when I read the plaque, several years ago, it did not enlighten me, as I did not know about the USS Maine. I had to look it up. In ninety-nine more years people will have to look up 9/11. We'll forget, because people forget things. That's why we keep making the same mistakes.
