Cheer up

You know whose fault all of this is? George Gordon, Lord Byron. The first fictional vampires were modeled on him, they were all emo aristocratic types who were sexually irresistible, and well over a century later that is still the standard vampire pattern. The good writers run with this, I mean you really feel Count Dracula's ruined magnificence, his Satanic pride, his need to make the world -- the real world, meaning England -- feel his power. In the hands of a bad writer, all that Miltonian majesty becomes an abusive boyfriend who sparkles in the sunlight. For example. Anyway, we all seem to agree that vampires are sex-crazed assholes with lots of feelings, and that's Byron's fault. That's also why it's so easy for me to use them as metaphors for my own depression and social anxiety. Feelings! So many feelings!
