I like to draw octopodes

Mantle has far more meanings than mantel, but in my experience mantel is usually the word an author wants, because people talk about fireplaces more than they talk about octopus heads. (I'm not saying I approve of that, I'm just stating a fact.) And yet mantle is usually the word an author actually uses, maybe because the -le ending is much more common in English than the -el ending so it seems more plausible. What words end in -el, after all? Lintel, roundel, teasel, weird words like that. But we use -le words every day: handle, purple, bottle, little. I bet the French are somehow to blame for this.
