She made it. The fetid growth is gone, along with its fetid stink, and in their place is a bandage of red gauze that Aki halfheartedly plucks at with her teeth. I gave her her daily dose of antibiotic disguised in a spoonful of sugary peanut butter and grape jelly, and she ate it in short order, but it was clear that what she really wanted was to get out of the little cage and run around. Isn't that amazing? Only a few hours after general anesthesia and major surgery, she's ready to play. I'm going to keep her in there until tomorrow, though -- mostly for my sake. She may feel feisty, but I'm exhausted.
I know that I'll lose her soon anyway, and that sucks. But if I've learned anything in this life, it's that honest sadness beats the shit out of feeling nothing at all.
