I got Bela on eruv Rosh Hashana 2009, and I've been wondering a lot recently if his name is written in the Book of Life for this year. He's still being languid on the bottom of his tank, gills working perhaps harder than they usually do, but I think the Rid Fungus is doing the trick for the pale tufts on his head at least. The question now is what will become of the bacterial problem: he gets a third dose of amoxicillin today.
Despite his ongoing languor, something did happen yesterday that pleased me. Bela hadn't been eating, and I was worried that I was going to conquer his various illnesses only to have him starve through a combination of weakness and stupidity. So when he didn't swim up to the pellets I sprinkled into his tank, I reached in and half-lifted, half-herded him to the surface. He didn't seem to find this alarming. Better than that, when confronted with the pellets he gulped down four of them before sinking back to the bottom. I didn't really think that would work!
