It makes sense that golems can't talk. I think the idea is that the power of speech is granted only to creatures with souls, and of course only God can make those. The golem is made of mud, just like Adam: human beings, if they're holy enough, can create life as God did, but only a very crude imitation of the kind of life God can create. And like God, these holy men create with language: the Hebrew word emet or emeth, meaning truth, written somewhere on the golem's person. Erase the first letter and you get met or meth, meaning death. Then the golem disintegrates. This sometimes becomes necessary because golems, unsurprisingly, have a tendency to go rogue. But I don't think that will happen with the Golem of Prog.
