Searching for Clyde

Pac-Man is generally described as a game in which ghosts chase the player through a maze, but that's really only half true. If the ghosts were all targeting you all the time, the game would be brief and boring, because they'd all just converge on you every time. But each ghost targets different things at different times, and some of them are more zealous than others. Clyde, the orange ghost, has an algorithm that makes him the least zealous of the four. When he's far away from Pac-Man, Clyde targets him, but when he gets within a certain distance of Pac-Man, Clyde's target changes so that he starts moving away, back toward his "favorite" corner of the screen, the lower left. That eventually brings him far enough away from Pac-Man that his target changes back, and so the cycle repeats. This is a good algorithm for an enemy to have, because it means Clyde's the easiest of the four ghosts to avoid: he does most of the work himself. It is not such a good algorithm for single men to have, when you're a single woman.
