Rat music

The domestic Norway rat is an oddly dainty creature, what Robinson Crusoe would call a nice gentleman. For one thing, it does not care to eat the skins of fruits or vegetables, just as some people do not care to eat the crusts of bread. My rats hollow grapes and blueberries out like bowls; when presented with a savory chunk of apple, say, they carve away the flesh until only the skin is left, scraped clean and curling up at the edges like a parchment. Their carving makes a tiny scrunching sound, like a tiny music.

I hardly want to throw these little parchments away; they are like some kind of magical artifact, such as hen's teeth or a candle made from the fat of a hanged man. If I were to conjure with them, I wonder what would happen?
