The latest Gorillaz video was just released. I like this band very much, and I like the concept behind it -- because the members are cartoons, very detailed cartoons with sprawling personal histories, and can do and say all kinds of things that real human beings can't. Like Devo, Gorillaz is less a band than an art project in the shape of a band. The animation, like the music, is smart, sad, aggressive, and beautiful, with themes of war and damage and loss side by side with themes of innocence and joy and life-affirming violence. It is also sometimes very funny, in a fucked-up kind of way. So it's all my favorite things.
In the latest video, something terrible happens to one of the band members. It is unclear whether or not she is still alive. This has pretty much ruined my day.
Sometimes I wish I didn't have the kind of temperament to get so upset at things like this, but there it is. I'm as soft as a two-minute egg.
