What is the appeal of NaNoWriMo? Why would anyone want to torture herself for a short, awful book? Because, and I don't mean this as a personal criticism, any novel written in less time than it took William Faulkner to write As I Lay Dying is going to be awful. And even short, awful novels hurt to write. So how does this make any more sense than, say, National Eat Nothing But Pears Month?
