Draw a vial of blood, add an anticoagulant, and centrifuge it, and you'll end up with something in three layers, like a tequila sunrise. At the bottom are the red blood cells, at the top is the plasma, and in the middle is a thin layer of white blood cells. This thin layer is called the buffy coat. I desperately wish to mention this fact in a vampire story but I can't think of a way to work it in. Instead, I sank to a new low:
